The Four-à-Chaux de Lembach is a major site of the Maginot Line in Alsace. Its guided tour will allow you to discover the period equipment of this imposing fortress with 5km of underground galleries and to understand its role during the Second World War.
The guided tour of the fortress is led by the volunteer guides of the "Association des amis de la Ligne Maginot de Lembach", who will guide you through the museum for about 1.5 hours and 30 minutes, taking you on a journey of about 1.5 km through the underground galleries and showing you the equipment and installations of the Four-à-Chaux.
Built between 1930 and 1935, the Four-à-Chaux fortress is one of the major sites of the Maginot Line in Alsace. Its location on a limestone hill south of the village of Lembach makes it a special place built on two levels of galleries. Visitors enter the upper gallery of the structure at ground level through the men's entrance, then gradually go down under the hill to end up 30m underground in the heart of the building, then reach the lower gallery using the sloping plane, unique in Alsace, by means of a staircase with 215 steps, before exiting through the ammunition entrance. Most of the original installations are still in place. The visitor will go from the barracks where the 580 men who occupied the structure during the mobilisation lived and where he can discover the kitchen, dormitories, hospital... to the officers' quarters and the central command post, then he will have the opportunity to visit one of the combat blocks where the guide will demonstrate the functioning of the artillery turret, before discovering the engine room, the multi-purpose room and an important museum...
This very complete visit allows everyone to imagine life in a Maginot Line fortress and to understand how this important line of defence functioned during the Second World War. (duration of the visit: 1h30 - temperature: 13°C)

Une visite qui prend son temps et soucieuse de bien faire.
Un coup de chapeau à tous ces gens passionnés sans qui ce formidable patrimoine aurait disparu depuis longtemps. On pourrait souhaiter plus d'informations concrètes et précises sur ce qui s'est passé ici (dates ou au moins périodes et intensité des bombardements, attaques au sol (infanterie ?, blindés...?) s'il y en a eu, méthodes et pertes allemandes, etc...); mais le contexte général est néanmoins bien et clairement présenté. Un regret également d'avoir dû passer rapidement dans la dernière partie "musée" qui présente une belle collection iconographique qui pourrait faire réfléchir sur ce passé, et pas seulement. Sur le plan pratique tout est parfait. Visite de plus de 2 heures avec 2 petits enfants (6 et 10 ans) qui ont tout suivi sans se faire prier !
Sehr interessante Führung, aber nicht barrierefrei!
Auf der Website wird der Besuch der Festung durch ein blaues Rollstuhlsymbol als barrierefrei beworben. Das ist nicht der Fall. Zum Eingang der Festung muss man vom Parkplatz aus für mehrere hundert Meter einen steil ansteigenden Schotterweg gehen. Viele Gänge in der Festung sind recht eng, für mich hat es aber ausgereicht. In einem Teil der Gänge verlaufen Schienen parallel zum Gang. Hier muss man sehr aufpassen, nicht mit den Lenkrädern des Rollstuhls hängen zu bleiben. Nachdem ein Großteil der Festung besichtigt werden konnte, geht es für Rollstuhlfahrer nicht weiter: es folgt eine Treppe mit 100 Stufen zu einer Gefechtsstation, anschließend geht es 200 Stufen runter. Wer das nicht schafft, muss umkehren. Mein Mann hat mich begleitet, glücklicherweise haben wir den Weg durch die labyrinthartigen Gänge bis zum Ausgang schnell gefunden. Nachdem wir den steilen Schotterweg nach unten gegangen sind, konnten wir mit Hilfe der Dame an der Kasse die Führung im unteren Bereich der Festung rückwärts gehen und so wieder auf die Gruppe stoßen. Fazit: Die Führung an sich war sehr interessant, aber es sollte auf der Website ganz klar gemacht werden, dass Menschen, die Schwierigkeiten mit Treppen haben, nur Teile der Festung besichtigen können und dass auch die stufenlosen Bereiche nur für die fittesten Rollstuhlfahrer oder sehr erfahrenen Rollstuhlschieber und nicht zu große Rollstühle geeignet sind. Die Festung als rollstuhlgeeignet zu bewerben, ist absolut falsch.
Deutsche Führung
Eigentlich gut und sehr interessant, aber leider hat man in der deutschen Führung nur recht schwer verstanden - zu schnell/undeutlich...was etwas schade war! Stand man nicht direkt vor dem Erklärenden, hat man nichts verstanden!
